Why do pecan limbs break so easily?

Pecan wood is heavy, and the long horizontal limbs carry a lot of weight at the tips, especially in a good nut year. Shortening those limbs and taking out the dead ones is the usual fix, and it's much cheaper than a limb through the roof.

The top of my tree is dead. Is the whole tree dying?

Not always. Dead branches at the top can come from drought, root damage or just age. Some trees bounce back after the dead wood is removed, and some don't. We'll look at it and tell you honestly which you have.
